Q&A with Dr. Maria Casillas-Abundis on pancreatic transplants

Our most recent guest on the show is the fourth person in a collaborative series we are doing with the Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest organization to raise research money solely for pancreatic cancer research.

Dr. Maria Casillas-Abundis came to work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from Mexico City three years ago.  She is a woman who is dedicated and inspirational.  She always wanted to be a surgeon and is meeting her dreams.  She is involved in transplant surgery and has spent two years doing kidney transplants before turning her focus to transplants of the pancreas.

Here are some of the things we discussed on the podcast:

  • Who is the typical person who receives a pancreatic islet transplant?
  • Talk about the patients’ journey from arriving at your door to the moment they receive the transplant.
  • What is the connection between what you are doing and pancreatic cancer?

The interview is the perfect length for a walk outside!
